What is CBD? (Cannabidiol)

Have you ever wondered what is CBD? Well, Cannabidiol or “CBD” for short, is a naturally occurring phytocannabinoid found in the cannabis sativa hemp plant. It is a 100% natural, safe, and non-addictive compound that is used for its potential health benefits. CBD is one of the 120 cannabinoids that have currently been identified in the hemp plant. Unlike the cannabinoid THC, which we’re all familiar with, CBD is non-intoxicating, so it will never induce a ‘high’ sensation. It has been shown that CBD may actually counteract the intoxicating effects of THC.

Demand for CBD has soared in the last several years as more people share their stories on how CBD has made a positive impact on their health and wellbeing. Many individuals turn to CBD for relief as a natural alternative to over-the-counter medications in hopes of reducing potential side effects and preventing addiction. Research is growing day-by-day showing that CBD may actually be a promising option for those struggling with mental ailments as well as treatment resistant conditions.

Unlike all medications, CBD has little to no side effects. Some side effects include:

  • dry mouth;
  • drowsiness;
  • changes in appetite & digestion;
  • changes in blood pressure;
  • abnormal liver function blood tests.

Most side effects are uncommon and can be easily prevented, and/or reversed by changing the dose you’re taking. Additionally, changes in the liver are a rare side effect, but it’s good to be aware nonetheless.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is just one of over 85 cannabinoids presently identified in the cannabis plant and is the second most abundant cannabinoid in marijuana after THC. In hemp, however, THC is only present in trace amounts, while CBD dominates the

plant’s makeup. CBD interacts with our naturally occurring systems, but is non-psychotropic, it doesn’t cause a high. This makes it a safer, less controversial alternative, while still offering significant health benefits.

Where does CBD come from?

CBD is derived from the flowers, stems, and leaves of the cannabis sativa hemp plant. It is extracted and then mixed with a carrier oil like coconut, hemp seed, or olive oil. This mixture can be taken directly as a tincture, formulated as a balm or cream to be applied topically, or added to capsules, gummies, syrups, and other consumables.

Hemp and marijuana plants are in the same species. Both contain different cannabinoids, but in different concentrations. THC is found in high quantities in marijuana plants, but hemp has lower concentrations. For CBD to be legal, it can only contain less than .3% of THC. As a result, CBD is extracted from hemp plants and lab testing then ensures that the legal limits of THC are met. Industrial hemp is used for CBD production as they are made to have high levels of CBD versus negligible amounts of THC to ensure its legality.

How does CBD work?

How It Works

The reason why CBD works well for so many is because it works together with our body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). All animals have an ECS that works with the purpose of maintaining homeostasis, or internal balance. This system is in charge of keeping our bodies in balance by managing critical processes in the body. It helps promote optimal organ function, regulate sleep wake cycles, modulates pain responses and metabolism, and more.

Just like our endocrine system produces and releases hormones, our endocannabinoid system produces molecules known as endogenous cannabinoids which are similar to hemp cannabinoids. These endocannabinoids link to cannabinoid receptors throughout the body which can be found in various organ systems.

Like all systems in the human body, the ECS can falter leaving our bodies imbalanced and prone to different ailments. This means that our bodies can struggle producing enough endocannabinoids. Studies show that an endocannabinoid deficiency can be an underlying cause for certain treatment resistant conditions like fibromyalgia, migraines, IBS, and more.

Consuming CBD on a regular basis and eating endocannbinoid boosting foods (i.e., cruciferous veggies, dark chocolate, healthy fats, etc.) may help improve an endocannabinoid deficiency. Additionally, you want to make sure that you support healthy ECS function. This can be done by engaging in stress reducing activities like exercise, eating pre/probiotic and fiber rich food, and sleeping regularly.
