Does CBD Show Up On a Drug Test?

CBD, otherwise known by its proper name cannabidiol, has risen to the forefront of the nation’s recent craze with healthy and homeopathic products. This compound, which is found abundantly in hemp and cannabis plants, has been shown to provide a plethora of different physical and mental benefits.

It is usually extracted from raw hemp plant matter in the form of an oil or solid isolate crystal/powder.  CBD can also be derived from a marijuana plant, but most companies that produce CBD-only products use CBD derived solely from the Hemp Plant. These concentrates are then incorporated into a variety of other enjoyable products. A few examples include oil-filled cartridges made for vaporizer pens, topical creams, sublingual drops, gummy drops, and even pet products!

The therapeutic properties that CBD may offer include potent and pronounced abilities to:

  • Combat chronic pain
  • Reduce inflammation of bodily tissues
  • Aid with relaxation
  • Combat insomnia
  • Control general anxiety and the occurrence of panic attacks
  • Combat nausea and vomiting
  • Increase appetite in those with eating disorders or undergoing body-ravaging chemotherapy
  • Help regulate hormones
  • Reduce the incidence of acne

Due to the sheer amount of scientific research that is now being conducted on cannabidiol around the world, it almost seems as if another beneficial use for it is discovered every week! And this rapidly growing amount of information is only increasing the demand for CBD from the public. To add to this growing craze, CBD has also been proven to cause no psychoactive effects or “highs” at all! The high that marijuana plants are infamous for is actually the work of another cannabinoid known as THC (which is short for tetrahydrocannabinol).

Since hemp-derived CBD supplements have nearly no THC in them at all, you can enjoy this beneficial cannabinoid without having to worry about becoming inebriated in any way. This is the main reason the hemp-extracted cannabidiol is legal in all 50 states in the US, while THC-containing marijuana is not (unless there are local recreational or medical laws allowing it).

But, does CBD show up on a drug test? This is a question that many people ask when they are debating about trying cannabidiol products for themselves. It makes sense; nobody wants to chance losing their job or freedom. Let’s take a closer look at the connection between CBD oil and a drug test.

Cbd Drug Test

Can you fail a drug test due to CBD?

Luckily for all of us, there are several reasons why it would be nearly impossible to fail a drug test from CBD-only use. First of all, almost all testing companies and police departments are not running tests to monitor for levels of cannabidiol in the body. Sure, they certainly perform drug tests for cannabis. However, they are almost always searching for the psychoactive, high-causing cannabinoid THC and not for its cousin, the innocuous, beneficial CBD!

We should clarify that since CBD is a chemical that gets metabolized by the human body, it is possible that it could be detected in a CBD test, specifically designed for that motive. It’s just that most tests are not! There is a small (and somewhat valid) concern that should be noted about CBD products: some of them contain trace amounts of THC – depending on the type of the product. Could this minuscule concentration put you in jeopardy of failing your next drug test?

Will trace amounts of THC in my CBD products cause me to fail a drug test?

This question is a bit trickier to answer than the last one. The answer is that it really depends on the specific drug test that is used. Each type of examination is working on different detection thresholds of THC. Let’s take a more in-depth look at the most common drug tests you might encounter.

  1. Hair Follicle Drug Test

The hair test, while rarely used, was originally created to specifically identify chronic THC and other substance abusers. This is why this test has a relatively high detection threshold. If you are using hemp-derived CBD oil, you will most likely not trigger a positive on this type of exam unless you were literally dosing almost all the time.

That being said, it should be noted that the CBD industry is quite new, and there isn’t yet a standard practice to regulate its products. That means that, regardless of what the label might say, there is really no way to be completely sure of the ingredients that make up a particular supplement – unless you can see the Certificate of Analysis (COA) such as the ones ReThink provides with every product.

  1. Mouth Swab Drug Test

Drug tests performed by examining a person’s saliva are becoming more common nowadays, due to the ease of administering each test as well as its overall effectiveness. It is also notoriously hard to cheat. Many people have found novel ways to smuggle in some clean urine for a drug test. However, it is impossible to carry someone else’s saliva in your mouth.

Swab drugs tests were designed to test for recent substance use. While the THC detection thresholds are usually lower than hair follicle tests, as long as you keep your mouth clean (pun very much intended) and avoid taking any CBD products that may have trace amounts of THC in the hours before the exam, you should be good to go! This is because the mouth is constantly cleaning itself out.

  1. Urine Drug Test

Almost everyone has undergone the urine test at some point in their life; it has been the standard drug examination used throughout the United States for quite some time. Since it also has a low detection threshold, it COULD potentially detect THC in your system if you are using a lot of THC-infused CBD products and/or have a sluggish metabolism. However, even in both of those cases, the chances of you failing a urine test by using hemp-extracted CBD is still extremely small.

How long does THC stay in your system?

The length of time that THC stays in your body depends on your metabolism, and how much THC you were ingesting in the first place. The general rule is that the slower your metabolism is, the longer it will take to clear from your system. If you rarely ingest THC or take an almost negligible amount of it through a hemp-based CBD product, it should only take you about a week from the time of your last dose for your body to be THC-free.

If you use THC chronically, and it builds up to testable levels within your body, it could take you anywhere from one to three months to clear your system of it. However, if your THC ingestion is from CBD supplements made of hemp, that time will be far less.
