How Much CBD Oil Should I Give My Dog?

Over the past few decades, the use of cannabidiol, CBD for short, has grown almost exponentially within the United States. This incredible growth in popularity is primarily due to the vast amount of clinical research confirming a variety of health benefits that this amazing molecule provides.

But, believe it or not, these CBD health benefits don’t have to be enjoyed by just us; pet CBD has become a common buzzword throughout the pet community and industry. Dogs & cats as well as other animals can use CBD products too (of course, as long as they’re pet safe).

Most pet CBD is targeted towards dogs & cats, but today we are discussing CBD for dogs. There are many effective CBD oil benefits for dogs! If you’re debating about trying CBD oil for dogs, read on to learn more about a good starting point, mg of CBD your dog should be taking, and what a regular dose looks like.

Let’s take a more in-depth look at the relationship between our favorite canines and cannabidiol!

What is CBD oil for dogs used for?

CBD oil has been used by many pet canines for the past few years once substantial studies illustrated the variety of potential health benefits cannabidiol could provide humans and other mammals. Due to the fact that almost every mammal shares a powerful underlying biomechanism known as the endocannabinoid system, CBD and other cannabinoids can cause a plethora of potent mental and physical effects by interacting with it.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is made up of an assortment of cannabinoid binding sites known as CB1 and CB2 receptors. These receptors are primarily found in our brains and immune systems and they are where the CBD in our hemp-based supplements interact with our bodies.

The endocannabinoid system is essentially a type of biomechanical supercomputer that our body uses to monitor and moderate a variety of different processes occurring throughout our bodies. These processes include the regulation of our sleep patterns, appetite, stress levels, and a wide array of hormones. The regular ingestion of CBD products by either dogs & cats, or humans may cause many irregularities of our biology to disappear or be reduced.

CBD oil also has a profound ability to reduce inflammation in aggravated tissues throughout the body. This powerful property is the primary reason that cannabidiol products are also well-known to alleviate pain.

Is CBD oil safe for dogs?

You can rest assured that hemp-based CBD products are quite safe for your dogs to ingest, but it should also be CBD that is THC free and made with pet safe ingredients because even though we all have an ECS, we cannot ingest the same things.

However, it would make a lot of sense to have some level of trepidation about giving your pets something new, especially a supplement with any type of cannabinoid. It should be noted that all ReThink CBD products have zero THC, and our pet line made for dogs & cats is only formulated with pet safe ingredients.

All cannabidiol-only products that are sold and consumed legally in all 50 US states must contain 0.3 percent or less of THC. This nearly negligible amount of tetrahydrocannabinol won’t result in your pets suffering from any type of THC-induced side effects, but because THC is toxic to animals, aim to buy THC free CBD. Again, ReThink Products have zero THC!

Is Cbd Oil Safe For Dogs

CBD oil for dogs side effects

Luckily, CBD itself doesn’t have many negative side effects. Many CBD enthusiasts feel that the CBD is a substance that nobody can overdose from.

For humans, the most common side effects are drowsiness, changes in bowel movements, and dry mouth. These side effects also apply to pets, but are not serious and can easily be reversed by reducing the mg of CBD taken.

And, to be honest, there is quite a bit of truth to that statement; the primary negative of overusing CBD is the fact that you are going to end up over-buying cannabidiol supplements and spending more money than you should. The best way to avoid this is to start slow and monitor your dog closely to see if it starts to act more lethargic, drowsy, or docile than usual. If they do, reduce the amount of CBD you are giving them.

Is there one specific CBD dosage for dogs to take that is perfect for them all?

Believe it or not, there actually isn’t a regular dose for dogs! The proper dose for your pet canine actually depends on their size and body weight, metabolism, and the particular ailment they need treatment for.

Obviously, bigger dogs require higher doses while dogs of smaller body weight require lower doses. This rule of thumb applies to both dogs & cats. If you are trying to relieve them of extreme pain or some other major ailment, you will also want to administer higher doses and put them on a regular CBD regimen so that it is always in their system.

If you just want to help deter some occasional skittishness or unnecessary anxiety, a ‘regulatr’ dose whenever they start acting frantic can work wonders! Again, a smaller dosage is a good starting point. Start with this and do this consistently for a week before increasing to higher doses. Just like any supplement, you would take for yourself, you would want to allow time for this to build up into their system and take effect, so be patient and consistent.

ReThink CBD has two ingestible products for pets at this time

  1. CBD Pet Spray (both for dogs & cats)– Spray directly into the mouth, on food, or in water. Our CBD oil spray comes in 100mg and 250mg spray bottles. Use the lower dosage for smaller animals and for general health maintenance and the higher dosage for bigger animals or for when needing to manage severe or chronic ailments.
  2. CBD Dog Treats (only for dogs)– Give as a treat or mix with their solid food. ReThink CBD Dog Treats come in 100mg/50count jar, and a 40mg/20count jar. Daily treats vary based on body weight.

Below are some of the easiest rules to keep in mind about the amount of CBD to use for your dogs:

1. Small dogs (weighing 25 pounds or less)

Dogs of this size really don’t need much CBD oil:

ReThink CBD Spray –  2-3 sprays daily

ReThink CBD Treats – 1 treat

2. Medium-sized dogs (weighing roughly 25 to 75 pounds)

Healthy canines of this stature typically can get away with using a little more easily without causing any sluggishness:

ReThink CBD Spray: 3-4 sprays daily

ReThink CBD Treats: 25-55 lbs – 2-3 treats daily

3. Large dogs (weighing over 75 pounds)

Large dogs tend to need a larger dose of CBD for it to be effective. So, don’t hesitate to give them a little more than a medium size dog.

ReThink CBD Spray –  4-5 sprays daily

ReThink CBD Treats – Over 55lbs – 3-5 treats daily

What CBD supplements are best for my dog to use?

  • CBD Sprays
  • CBD Dog treats
  • CBD soaps and shampoos (for external use)

    • Good afternoon Lorrainne!
We would recommend speaking to their veterinarian first and checking if your little one is ready to receive alternative supplements. We would also suggest starting with a smaller dosage and building your way up to higher dosages to allow time for their bodies to adjust.

This is a wonderful, informative post! I have often been questioned about whether hemp products I use such as hemp seed oil and hemp milk are safe and how they relate to the marijuana plant. I never knew the answer to these questions except to say that they are a different part of the plant that doesn’t contain THC. Now I truly understand the difference! Thank you
