Fall Spices You Need This Season

Fall is here and we couldn’t be more thrilled! It’s time for cozy evenings, pumpkin spice lattes, bonfires and crisp, cool weather. You’ll find pumpkin candles, breads, and drinks on every corner that you turn at your local store. Pumpkin spice has really become the staple of fall over the last few years. Along with pumpkin, spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger are also all associated with this cozy season. Not only do these spices make us feel at home but they actually have great benefits too. Some even interact with our endocannabinoid system, which as we know is also what CBD interacts with when we consume it.

The Science Behind It

Why do we love fall spices so much? Overall, it relaxes us and just lifts our mood. However, there’s science behind why we love pumpkin spice and all the fall spices. Psychology professor Dr. Catherine L. Franssen explained that pumpkin spice reminds us of homemade comfort foods. Smell is one of our strongest senses linked to memories. Everytime we’re smelling pumpkin spice we automatically go back to a certain memory that makes us happy. That’s very powerful. Your amygdala is being stimulated whenever you’re drinking a pumpkin spice latte or eating a pumpkin pie. Along with great memories, pumpkin also has great benefits. It contains vitamin B and E. These vitamins have been shown to improve mood and boost serotonin. Now when pumpkin is consumed with cannabis it can really stimulate the mind and energize your body while relaxing you at the same time.

Bring On The Spices

Another fall spice that interacts with our ECS is nutmeg. Now this is a spice that can be added to anything. Vegetables, drinks, fruits, etc. In a study published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, scientists looked at the compounds in nutmeg. They looked into 13 of them and researched their ability to delay endocannabinoid breakdown. There was a molecule called 5-methocylicarin and they found it to be the most potent FAAH inhibitor. This is what enhances the action of the endocannabinoid AEA and other fatty acid amides indirectly through blocking their metabolism. The scientists tested the inhibitor on mice and it showed to reduce anxious behavior within them.

Fall Spices All Day Everyday

Pumpkin spice and nutmeg are just a few of the fall spices that not only have great benefits but can interact with our endocannabinoid system. Both pumpkin and cannabis contain terpenes. This is what gives the plant a distinctive smell and flavor. It’s all based on which ones are present in a particular strain. Now that it’s fall, take advantage of all things spices. There are tons of fall themed recipes out there. These terpenes have specific properties that may help medical cannabis patients treat their health conditions more effectively. While you’re at it, you can also add CBD to these recipes. Add our tincture oil to your pumpkin pie, your pumpkin spice latte, even into your creamy pumpkin soup. Because when taken together, you will be able to maximize the benefits of both the plant and the vegetable.
